The "Other Stuff"

1. If you have never played at this recital hall before, you may come fifteen minutes early to try out the piano; however, do not come too much earlier because there will be another recital going on!  Also, the management is letting us use this facility for free and they ask that the children NOT “practice” their pieces on the showroom floor pianos.  It is still a business and they do need our cooperation.

STUDENTS:  Please remember these tips:

  1. There are people you don’t know at the recital, but the ones who came to watch YOU are your family and friends.  So as you approach the stage, look at your family or friends and give them a big SMILE.  It will make them (and you) feel good and you’ll be starting on a positive “note” before you even press the first key!
  2. When you sit down at the piano, check the bench and if it’s not feeling comfortable, adjust it or ask me for help.  After it is adjusted, sit down and put your hands in your lap.
  3. Play through the first phrase in you mind before you take your hands off your lap.  Play it in your mind exactly like you want it to sound.  This is especially important for slow-starting pieces. After you have “heard” it in your head, place your hands on the keys and begin to play.
  4. When your performance is over, take your hands off the notes, your foot off the pedal, stand up and face the audience and BOW.  If it helps you to keep steady, you can place one hand on the piano.  DO NOT BOW WHILE YOU ARE WALKING OFF STAGE!  That looks embarrassing and silly.
  5. Practice these procedures several times before recital day at home with your stuffed animals, your dog or cat, your family and finally with your friends as an audience.
